Microneedling, also known as Collagen Induction therapy (CIT), is a vibrational stamping device. It uses very fine needles to increase skin stimulation, and effectively target fine lines, wrinkles, and scarring. Through vertical penetration, infusion channels are created into the skin to instantly hydrate with hyaluronic acid skin stimulating ingredients. Hyaluronic acid can hold up to 1000 times its weight in water making it a great serum to infuse into the skin. Microneedling, unlike heat based technologies, does not cause excessive heat or skin coagulation thus, the side effects are dramatically reduced and the risk almost zero. It can also be used to treat scarring such as surgical scars and acne scars.
At Monroe MedSpa we offer two different types of microneedling. The first is serum based. Our medical serums can be customized to treat your specific skin concerns. The second is PRP microneedling. This uses autologous (meaning your own) blood products to more powerful stimulate your own bodies regenerative properties.
The skin is cleansed and sterilised. Generally the skin will need to be numbed to ensure your comfort. The tip will glide over your skin creating stimulating channels and an even flushing is the best indication for a perfect medical treatment. The treatment usually takes around 1.5 hours in total.
A microtrauma is created which stimulates the skin to degrade old collagen and increase production of new collagen therefore, plumping up the skin by minimising the signs of ageing. It improves the thickness of the dermis as well as the epidermis. This in return improves the skin texture and reduces wrinkles. It also has a positive effect on hyper-pigmentation as well as on hypo-pigmentation. Microneedling helps reduce scars & acne scars by stimulating new collagen fibres and improving blood supply.
Recovery From Microneedling
The inflammatory reaction of the skin is extremely short-lived and fades significantly within hours from redness to pinkness that may last from 12 to 24 hours. A cooling mask is applied immediately following the treatment. This is rich in healing minerals and hyaluronic acid to soothe and calm the skin
What is a PRP with Microneedling?
Unofficially known as the “blood” or “dracula” facial. This procedure uses platelet rich plasma (PRP) to reduce scarring from acne, and speed up the collagen production to prevent the signs of aging. It has been found to have remarkable properties with regards to improving soft tissue healing and reduces inflammation. The nurse draws blood from your arm, uses a centrifuge to separate plasma, and then injects it into your skin in combination with a microneedling medical device.
How long does PRP with Microneedling usually take to perform?
This procedure is done in office and takes 1 hour. If treatment is being used to reduce scarring of the skin, multiple treatments may be recommended.
How do you perform PRP with Microneedling?
The procedure itself is simple. It involves one or two vials of blood drawn from the patient, platelets and plasma are then separated with a centrifuge system. This system concentrates the platelets 2.5x the normal resting blood levels. Numbing cream is applied to the face. Next, the harvested PRP is injected into the face and we use the injections combined with micro needling to further stimulate collagen synthesis. This procedure takes about an hour.
Who is a good candidate for PRP with Microneedling?
Patients are typically 20-50 years old looking to prevent the signs of aging, or reduce minimal to moderate aging signs. Patients with acne scarring would benefit from a series of treatment possibly in conjunction with laser resurfacing of the skin. PRP is a natural component of your body, thus there are relatively few reasons why one would not be a candidate for treatment. Patients who are not good candidates for PRP are those with platelet disorders or who are on medications that inhibit platelet function. Other bleeding issues, liver problems such as cirrhosis, or acute / chronic infections may also be a contraindication for treatment. Discuss any concerns you have or medical problems during your initial consultation.
What are realistic expectations for a patient having PRP with Microneedling?
PRP with microneedling can increase collagen production, thus slowing down the signs of aging. It can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and promote volume in the face. Skin will appear rejuvenated and refreshed.
How long does it take for a patient to recover from PRP with Microneedling?
Patients may resume normal activity immediately after the treatment. Skin will appear red, and may be sensitive to touch once numbing wears off. Sun exposure should be avoided.
